マコモの葉

写真の右がまこも。左が稲です。収穫前のまこもです。収穫時には２メートルくらいになります。
まこもの葉は、昔から神事や仏事ともかかわりがあったとされています。
お釈迦様がまこもで編んだムシロに病人を寝かせて治療をしたという話や、特に愛された象に、まこもを好んで食べさせたという話が残っています。これが日本に伝わって、お盆にまこもで編んだ「盆ござ」や「盆舟」を捧げるようになったそうです。
また出雲大社には「真菰（まこも）祭り」があります。
つまり、まこもは古い昔から「病気を癒すもの」「邪気を払うもの」「浄化するもの」という霊草として伝承されてきたのだということがわかります。
葉っぱは売られていませんが、しめ縄みたいなものだけでなくて、私は、今風にリースとか作ればいいのではと思います。
